Uzbekistan, Uruguay dismantle opponents

Uzbekistan smashed Taiwan in the first of their two meetings this month, with a hat-trick scored by Shatskykh within the first 35 minutes. They won in shutout form, 9-0. The return leg will be on October 28th. Taiwan will be hosting the Uzbeks in the second match.

The Uruguayan coach, Oscar Tabarez, spoke about Bolivia before their match. "They are a strong team in midfield. The three midfielders are the base of everything which they do. We have to limit them and wrest control. We must win but we need to be on our toes because they play very good football and control the ball well"

His players listened. Uruguay used its three-man front of Forlán, Abreu, and Suárez to thwart the Bolivians, equaling their score in a 2003 qualifier in Uruguay, 5-0. Ronald García's first half red card didn't help Bolivia's cause. Uruguay is looking to improve upon its consecutive fifth-place finishes in the last two qualifying tournaments. Both teams resume qualifying on October 17th.
