Round One Draw for Africa

We will get to see how worthy South Africa are of hosting the World Cup by their results in the first round of qualifying against mighty Nigeria. Three of the top four African seeds (Cameroon, Nigeria, Morocco) are looking to validate their rankings by qualifying for the World Cup finals after missing out in 2006. Togo and Angola are looking to prove that they were no flukes last qualification cycle by marching into South Africa 2010. A * denotes a Germany 2006 participant. A # signifies a Ghana 2008 qualifier. The numbers are the teams' current ELO ratings.

Group A:

91 Democratic Republic of the Congo
134 Malawi

For the group winners, I have Cameroon, Guinea, Angola, Nigeria, Ghana, Sénégal, Côte d'Ivoire, Morocco, Tunisia, Mali, Zambia, and Egypt. I think that Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Benin, South Africa, Libya, Algeria, Mozambique, Ethiopia, Burkina Faso, Sudan, Togo, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo will take second place. Eight of the twelve second-place finishers will advance to CAF round two.

UEFA Preliminary Draw

England just cannot catch a break. Less than one week after being eliminated by Croatia from Euro2008, the two foes are drawn against each other again. Denmark and Sweden are also drawn together again, giving the Danish fans a chance to redeem themselves as a civilized audience. The toughest groups appear to be Groups A, C, F, and G. A * denotes a Germany 2006 particapant and a # represents a Euro2008 qualifier.

Group A:
13 Portugal *#

58 Montenegro

Group I:
6 Netherlands *#
33 Scotland
31 Norway
75 Macedonia
106 Iceland

My predictions for the group winners are Portugal, Greece, Czech Republic, Germany, Spain, England, France, Italy, and the Netherlands. For the second positions, I foresee Sweden, Switzerland, Poland, Russia, Turkey, Croatia, Romania, Bulgaria, and Scotland. Russia, Turkey, and Bulgaria will take advantage of easier groups to snag second-place finishes, whereas Denmark, Ukraine, and Serbia fall victim to tougher draws.

The top eight of nine second-place finishers will be decided by their point totals against the 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 5th-place finishers in their respective groups.

CONCACAF Preliminary Draw

The top seeds in each group are the United States of America, México, and Costa Rica. The second seeds in each group are Trinidad and Tobago, Honduras, and Panamá. The other seeded teams were Guatemala, Cuba, Jamaica, Canada, Guyana, and Haiti. Saint Vincent and the Grenadines received a first-round bye. Note that Guadeloupe are not members of FIFA and therefore cannot participate in the World Cup despite their semifinal appearance at the 2007 Gold Cup.

The team listed first is the home team for the first match of the two-legged playoff. The numbers are the teams' current ELO ratings.

Group A:
185 Dominica vs. 133 Barbados
28 United States of America vs. Winner

214 Turks and Caicos Islands vs. 162 St. Lucia
81 Guatemala vs. Winner

166 Bermuda vs. 187 Cayman Islands
84 Trinidad and Tobago vs. Winner

193 Aruba vs. 177 Antigua and Barbuda
Winner vs. 85 Cuba

Group B:
189 Belize vs. 150 St. Kitts and Nevis
Winner vs. 12 México

198 Bahamas vs. 191 British Virgin Islands
67 Jamaica vs. Winner

174 Dominican Republic vs. 197 Puerto Rico
46 Honduras vs. Winner

54 Canada vs. 128 St. Vincent and the Grenadines

Group C:
215 U.S. Virgin Islands vs. 162 Grenada
Winner vs. 50 Costa Rica

147 Suriname vs. 219 Montserrat
Winner vs. 125 Guyana

112 El Salvador vs. 219 Anguilla
65 Panamá vs. Winner

179 Nicaragua vs. 173 Netherlands Antilles
71 Haiti vs. Winner

I see the teams with byes to round two all coming through to round three, although Panamá vs. El Salvador and Haiti vs. Nicaragua will be great ties. I also see Canada coming through against St. Vincent and the Grenadines. I picked the top twelve seeds to advance to the final twelve, so we'll see how many upsets disprove my predictions.

AFC Round Three Draw

Australia were the top seed coming into the draw, but they left with the toughest group of any of the top five Asian countries. Group E will certainly put southwest Asian braggin rights on the line and will have the least travel time required for its contestants. South Korea appear to have been given the easiest route to round four, but none of these labels matter once the games begin.

The numbers are the teams' current ELO ratings.

Group A:
36 Australia
62 China
51 Iraq
88 Qatar

Group B:
23 Japan
96 Bahrain
70 Oman
105 Thailand

Group C:
47 South Korea
82 North Korea
86 Jordan
111 Turkmenistan

Group D:
42 Saudi Arabia
61 Uzbekistan
123 Lebanon
114 Singapore

Group E:
28 Iran
94 Kuwait
97 United Arab Emirates
80 Syria

Who do I believe will come through? Australia and Iraq, Japan and Oman, South Korea and North Korea, Saudi Arabia and Uzbekistan, and Iran and the United Arab Emirates are my picks.

UEFA Pots Announced

The European pots were finalized today after the final round of qualifying for Euro2008 was played. The seedings were based on the new November 2007 FIFA rankings. England's final day loss to Croatia in UEFA Euro2008 qualifying relegates them to Pot B while Greece moves up to Pot A.

There will be eight groups of six teams and one group of five teams. This is because there will be one less team in Pot F than in the other pots.

Pot A:
Italy
Spain
Germany
Czech Republic
France
Portugal
Netherlands
Croatia
Greece

Pot B:
England
Romania
Scotland
Turkey
Bulgaria
Russia

Brazil 2 - Uruguay 1; Paraguay and Ecuador win big

Ecuador had suffered through a stretch of three losses to begin its qualifying campaign. Perú's Vílchez was removed after ten minutes due to an injury. That, coupled with Ecuador's return to home in Quito inspired the Ecuadorians to turn around its fortunes. The Ecuadorians outshot their opponents twelve to one on route to taking a 3-0 halftime lead and a 5-0 late in the second half. Perú did manage to lead the yellow card category with four and pulled back a consolation goal to make the score final 5-1.

Brazil, despite being outshot at home eleven to four by visiting Uruguay and despite falling behind by a goal early, Brazil were able to pull even by the half. In fact, Brazil pulled out a 2-1 win. Uruguay drew four yellow cards. The difference was Dunga's decision to start Fabiano in place of Vágner Love. Dunga spoke about his choice. "He's different from Vágner, he's stronger and leads the line very well. He played a good game. Football is about the moment and he came in and took his chance." Uruguayan defender Lugano also spoke after the game. "We played better over the 90 minutes but we lacked experience to kill off the game. It's very difficult with all the forwards that Brazil have."

Paraguay gained an important three points on the road by beating Chile 3-0 in Santiago. Paraguay jumped to the top of the South American qualifying table with the victory. They managed to do this despite drawing (you guessed it) four yellow cards.

CONMEBOL qualifying resumes in June 2008. Current ELO ratings are given before the name of the country. The current point totals are in bold.

14 Paraguay 10
3 Argentina 9
1 Brazil 8
15 Colombia 8
44 Venezuela 6
19 Uruguay 4
38 Chile 4
45 Ecuador 3
53 Perú 2
73 Bolivia 1

If the World Cup qualifiers were to end today, Paraguay, Argentina, Brazil, and Colombia would be celebrating and Venezuela would be sweating out a playoff with a CONCACAF team.

Goals scored:
Ecuador: Ayovi 10, 48; Kaviedes 24; E. Méndez 44, 62

Perú: A. Mendoza 86

Brazil: Fabiano 44, 65

Uruguay: Abreu 8

Paraguay: Cabañas 23; da Silva 45+1, 56

New Zealand and New Caledonia romp

New Zealand looked to distance themselves from the rest of their group by adding another three points to their haul with a win at home against Vanautu. They did just that, taking a 3-0 lead into the half and finishing with a 4-1 win at the final whistle. Unfortunately, the New Zealand captain Tim Brown picked up a second yellow card in second half stoppage time and was sent off the pitch. He will be inelgible for New Zealand's next qualifier. They will still have Shane Smeltz, who with four goals in three games is the top scorer in Oceania's second round of qualifying.

“We missed too many chances against New Caledonia on Saturday when we were 2-0 up. If we had converted some easy chances to make it 3-0, 4-0, then the game was over. New Caledonia will be a much tougher prospect today if Pierre Wajoka is selected. Wajoka is a very good player and very professional but we will see what happens,” said Juan Buzzetti, coach of Fiji.

His New Caledonian counterpart Didier Chambaron also spoke before the match. “The first match with Fiji was very difficult. We have a healthy respect for Fiji and we must remain humble. The challenge is to get morale and motivation in our camp high again. We will have to use our speed and pace out wide to greater effect than we did in Fiji.”

New Caledonia took their overall record against Fiji in 2010 qualifying to 2-0-2 with a four-goal shutout victory at home. It was their first appearance at home, and the return of Pierre Wajoka coupled with the absence of Fijian Peni Finau allowed for a comfortable victory. New Caledonia knocked home two goals in each half.

OFC qualifying resumes in June 2008. The current point totals are as follows: New Zealand 9, New Caledonia 4, Fiji 1, Vanuatu 0. It seems as though the two matches between New Zealand and New Caledonia in September 2008 will decide the OFC champion.

Goals scored:
New Zealand: Mulligan 14, 81; Smeltz 29 PK, 34

Vanuatu: Sakama 50

New Caledonia: Wajoka 28; Hmae 31, 60; Mapou 63

Venezuela 5 - Bolivia 3; Colombia 2 - Argentina 1

In perhaps the most back-and-forth affair of World Cup qualifying so far, Venezuela came back from being one goal down three times to obtain a home victory against Bolivia. The man to save Venezuela the first two times was forward Daniel Arismendi, a beneficiary of Venezuela's decision to start a second forward for the first time in qualifying. Tied 2-2 at the half, Bolivia took a commanding 3-2 lead with only thirteen minutes left in the match. Venezuela managed to tie the game at three and then caught a break when Bolivian goalie Carlos Arias suffered a leg injury with no substitutions remaining. The Venezuelans received two goals from forward Giancarlo Maldonado, who took advantage of Arias's inability to jump for his first strike. His second goal and his team's fifth came against a stand-in goalie who was out of position.

In the day's other match, Colombia pulled off a shock home victory against previously unbeaten and untied Argentina, 2-1. Star Argentinian forward Carlos Tévez was sent off for kicking an opponent who was not a part of the play. Playing down a man for the rest of the game, Argentina did not go away. In fact, they took a 1-0 lead into the half after a goal from Messi. In the second half, Bustos executed a marvelous free kick reminiscent of the one he scored against Venezuela, and the Colombians picked up the win with an empty net strike past a beaten Abbondanzieri. The game featured another two cards for Argentina, these of the yellow variety. Colombia countered with five yellows of their own, including two for removal of shirts following goals.

Alfio Basile, coach of Argentina said afterwards, "We played a very good first half, but the only place where you can't afford to be left with ten players is at altitude. We felt it in the second half. With ten men, we played the way I like, playing the ball around, with triangulations, but we felt the difference of being a man short."

CONMEBOL qualifying resumes in June 2008. Argentina has 9 points, Colombia has 8, Venezuela has 6, and Bolivia has 1.

Goal scorers:
Venezuela: Arismendi 20, 40; Guerra 81; Maldonado 89, 90

Bolivia: Martins 19, 77; Arce 27

Colombia: Bustos 62; D. Moreno 82

Argentina: Messi 36

Perú 1 - Brazil 1; Uruguay 2 - Chile 2

Chile went into Montevideo looking for crucial road points against Uruguay. They got the job done with a 2-2 tie. Both Chile and Uruguay have earned four points so far in qualifying. Chile managed a tie despite being outshot eleven to four; in fact, Chile actually held a 2-1 late in the second half after being down 1-0 at the break. The game became very heated, though, as both teams picked up four yellow cards apiece.

"If we had won the match, it would not have coincided with what happened on the field of play, for which reason the point which we obtained was valuable to us." This was the opinion of Chilean coach Marcelo Bielsa.

"Brazil have good players, but none of them have four legs or four hands. They've had the upper hand in recent encounters but this is something else entirely. We can't afford to give them any space," said Peruvian midfielder Norberto Solano before the match.

Perú surely did not have high expectations coming into its match against world-beaters Brazil. Brazil certainly outperformed the Peruvians on the attack by taking seven shots from inside the penalty area. Unfortunately for Brazil, none of the shots found the back of the net. Perú took four yellows to Brazil's one and did everything they could to contain the high-powered Brazil sqaud at home in Lima. After being down 1-0 at the half, the Peruvians found a way to tie the game and earn their second point of qualifying so far. Brazil now have five points.

Brazilian coach Dunga spoke after the game. "Our performance was very good in the first half but we dropped off in the second, when we lost a lot of balls in the midfield and they were able to hit us on the break."

Goal scorers:
Chile: Salas 59, 69 PK

Uruguay: Suárez 42; Abreu 81

Brazil: Kaká 40

Perú: Vargas Risco 72

Thailand 1 - Yemen 0; Singapore advance; Syria, Turkmenistan roll

In the first match of the day, Singapore took its 2-0 aggregate lead to Tajikistan. Tajikistan got off to the best possible start with a goal in the first minute and were looking desperately to tie the aggregate. What they got instead was a tie game at the half. Neither team was able to hit the back of the net and Singapore came out with a 1-1 tie and a 3-1 aggregate victory. Singapore goes on to round three after pulling consecutive upsets.

Syria continued its dominance against Indonesia at home. As if a 4-1 road victory weren't vicious enough, the Syrians defeated the Indonesians with a seven-goal shutout. Surprisingly, given the final score, the Syrians were held by the Indonesians until the fortieth minute, and then the deluge began.

Thailand and Yemen were tied after one leg with one goal apiece. Thailand looked to draw upon its home crowd and qualify for Asia's third round. The Thais called upon Asia's top goalscorer Sarayoot Chaikamdee to do his thing, and he came through with his seventh goal of the tournament. The 1-0 score held up for Thailand, who now have advanced on a 2-1 aggregate victory. For Yemen, Al Wadi was sent off along with his team's hopes for South Africa in second half stoppage time.

The final match would determine which Asian team would be the twentieth and last nation to put its name into Asia's preliminary draw at Durban in one week's time. It pitted Hong Kong as visitors looking to steal a win in Turkmenistan with the aggregate tied at 0-0. A chippy first half-hour, featuring three yellow cards, ended without a goal. Turkmenistan, however, scored three unanswered goals to book its place in Asia's third round. They now eagerly await their fate at Durban.

Goal scorers:
Tajikistan: Ismailov 1

Singapore: Shah 27

Syria: Chaabo 41, 45, 86; Rafe 60, 90; Ali Dyab 74; Al Hussein 80 PK

Thailand: Chaikamdee 16

Turkmenistan: Nasyrov 40; Bayramov 55; Mirzoyev 80

Colombia 1 - Venezuela 0; Argentina, Paraguay win big

Argentina started off match day three of South American qualifying with a shutout victory at home to Bolivia, 3-0. Juan Riquelme netted two more scores, including one on a free kick, and pushed his tournament total to four, leading CONMEBOL in scoring. Bolivia did its best to slow Argentina's attack by any means, committing nineteen fouls to Argentina's eight.

Colombia keeper Agustín Julio spoke before the match against Venezuela. "Matches against Venezuela have always got that special derby flavour. Last time around they beat us on our own patch, but we're hoping to make home advantage count and start writing our own little piece of history."

Colombia dominated their neighbors Venezuela more than the final score line would indicate. The hosts outshot the visitors fifteen to four. Venezuela played a defensive game, attempting to come away with a scoreless draw. Up until the final five minutes of the game, the strategy had worked. Unfortunately for Venezuela, a well-placed free kick was the only goal of the game and sent the crowd in Bogotá into euphoria. Venezuela committed eleven fouls and were only able to draw four. Colombia have yet to surrender a goal in the tournament. Acoording to Venezuelan coach Richard Páez, "It was another tight game as always but we didn't count on the free kick."

In Paraguay, the host country destroyed Ecuador, a side that had qualified for the previous two World Cup finals. Ecuador are stuck in neutral and have lost all three of their qualifiers so far by a combined score of 11-1. Paraguay took a nice, comfortable 2-0 lead into the break and extended it to 3-0 before Ecuador scored its first goal of the tournament. The final score was 5-1 to the home side. This was the first match out of thirteen in South American qualfying in which both sides were able to score. Ecuador's coach, Luis Suárez, resigned after the match.

Goal scorers:
Argentina: Agüero 41; Riquelme 57, 74

Colombia: Bustos 82

Paraguay: Váldez 8; Riveros 26, 87; Santa Cruz 50; Ayala 82

Ecuador: Kaviedes 79

Sierra Leone 0 - Guinea-Bissau 0; Comoros finished

In the first FIFA World Cup qualifier ever in Comoros, the home territory was overtaken by Madagascar's attack. With a 6-2 lead in the aggregate coming in, Madagascar were all but guaranteed a slot into the final 48, yet they came out looking to win. A 1-0 lead at the half grew to 4-0 by the end of the match, and now Madagascar will await their fate in Durban.

Sierra Leone defeated Guinea-Bissau in a hard-fought 1-0 victory at home in Freetown. With the location shifting to Bissau, Guinea-Bissau were looking to pull the upset. While they did manage a clean sheet, Sierra Leone matched the feat and the result was a scoreless draw. Sierra Leone is the final team to join Africa's second round and will also be eagerly awaiting the Durban draw on November 25.

Goal scorers:
Madagascar: Nomenjanahary 38, 52; Rakotomandimby 62; Robson 74

New Zealand 2 - Vanuatu 1; Fiji tie New Caledonia

New Zealand, the favorites to win the OFC Nations Cup, started off their home-and-away qualifier with Vanuatu in the underdog's capital city, Port Vila. New Zealand had a 2-0 in Fiji last month, and today ran their point total in qualifying to six with a 2-1 victory. Vanuatu certainly had to have been pleased with their halftime lead of 1-0, but the New Zealanders answered early in the second half and put away a back-breaking goal in stoppage time to topple Vanuatu.

In a rematch of the final of the South Pacific Games, New Caledonia visited Fiji. This matchup was their third so far in qualifying, and the two will face off once more in four days time. New Caledonia now leads the series 1-0-2 over Fiji after their comeback, 3-3 draw in Ba. The Fijians took a 2-0 lead at the half and watched it disappear in the second. The current 2010 World Cup top scorer Osea Vakatalesau (12 goals) scored with under five minutes to go to put his home nation on top 3-2, but New Caledonia struck one minute later and held on for the tie.

Djibouti advance, eliminate Somalia 1 - 0

Djibouti put their name into the pot for the preliminary draw on November 25 by winning their one-off tie versus Somalia. Because Somalia was deemed unsafe for play, FIFA decided to shorten this tie to a single game in Djibouti. In fact, Somalia have not played at home since 1986. With the shutout victory, Djibouti have become team number 46 to qualify for Africa's second stage; only two more spots remain.

In other African news, Togo will not be allowed to play any of its first three home qualifiers in Togo. This decision was handed down after violent actions by Togo's fans were committed against visiting Mali players.

Thailand 1 - Yemen 1; Singapore, Tajikistan win

Round two of AFC qualifying started off today with two interesting matches setting up close ties and one potential blowout.

Singapore continued their improbable run to the third round of Asian qualifying with a two-goal shutout victory at home to Tajikistan. In fact, the Tajikis switched goalkeepers in the second half in order to cope with the Singaporean onslaught. Singapore are the only lower seed to advance to round two and look to the return leg to pull off another upset victory.

Regarding the play of the Bosnian-born goal scorer Duric, Singapore's coach Avramovic said, "He showed us his quality, some great passing and good positioning and did very well with both goals." Still, Avramovic saw room for improvement. "It was a good game. We knew we had to score some early goals to take into the second leg to have a chance of reaching the third round. I'm just disappointed we missed so many chances."

In the debut for Indonesia, they succumbed to their guests, the Syrians. Syria are the highest seeded team playing in the second round, and they asserted their dominance today with a 4-1 victory, including a back-breaker in second-half stoppage time. Indonesia now have a nearly impossible comeback on their hands as they are down three goals and need to score at least four on the road in order to survive.

The final match of the day involved Thailand visiting Yemen. The visitors took a 1-0 first-half lead behind a strike from Asia's top goal-scorer Chaikamdee only to watch it vanish within five minutes. No more goals were netted in the remainder of the match, but Ali Omqi did get sent off for Yemen and will not be available for the return match.

The second round continues tomorrow with Hong Kong hosting Turkmenistan. All four ties wrap up on November 18th.

AFC Round Two schedule

Indonesia will finally make their World Cup debut when they play their home leg on November 9, 2007. The second legs are to take place on November 18, 2007.

Seeding of second round teams:
12. Syria
13. Thailand
14. Turkmenistan
15. Tajikistan

16. Indonesia
17. Hong Kong
18. Yemen
19. Singapore

The numbers are the teams' current ELO ratings. All match times are local.

November 9, 2007
112 Tajikistan at 126 Singapore 7:30 PM Singapore
90 Syria at 129 Indonesia 7 PM Jakarta
104 Thailand at 153 Yemen 4:15 PM Şan‘ā’

November 10, 2007
115 Turkmenistan at 147 Hong Kong 4 PM Hong Kong

November 18, 2007
Singapore at Tajikistan 1 PM Dushanbe
Indonesia at Syria 2 PM Damascus
Yemen at Thailand 7:30 PM Bangkok
Hong Kong at Turkmenistan 6 PM Ashgabat

It seems as though all four higher seeds will advance through these ties and into round three, although Singapore will prove to be a tough test for Tajikistan.

Also, third-round qualifier Kuwait have been suspended from international competition by FIFA due to the government meddling into the country's soccer affairs. This could cause Kuwait to forfeit their place in World Cup.

Lebanon 2 - India 2, Lebanon advance

After being washed out in Chennai two days prior, the two teams met in Goa to decide their World Cup fates. It looked plausible for India to close the three-goal gap early on as they struck within the first half hour. Unfortunately for them, things were no better by the seventy-first minute. Here, disaster struck as their goalkeeper Subrata Paul took a red card. After his substitute came in, the Lebanese buried a penalty kick and with a subsequent goal buried India. Lebanon advance to round three. All eleven of the highest seeds won their first-round ties.

Jordan 2 - Kyrgyzstan 0, Jordan advance on PKs; three crazy ties

Jordan avoided the biggest first-round upset that any Asian team would have suffered. The Jordanians pushed one across in the first half at home in Ammān. They struck again in the second half and took the game into extra time. The aggregate remained tied at two after extra time, so the two teams went into extra time to keep their World Cup dreams alive. With the support of the home crowd, Jordan won the shootout 6-5 and move on to Asia's third round of qualifiers.

Insanity ensued in three other locales as well. India's home leg versus Lebanon was washed out by heavy raining in Chennai. Lebanon currently holds a 4-1 advantage, but they will have to wait until October 30 in Goa, India, to play the second leg.

For some as-of-yet unexplained reason, the match between North Korea and Mongolia was stopped in progress with the North Koreans leading 2-0. The match was resumed later and the North Koreans went on the win the match 5-1 to take the aggregate 9-2 and clinch a spot in the third round.

In the weirdest result that has been produced so far in the qualifiers, Palestine did not even show up to its match against Singapore in Singapore today and the home team was awarded a 3-0 victory and advancement to Asia's second round. Singapore are so far the only lower seed to win its tie and will remain that way assuming that India do not pull off a miracle.

Goal scorers:
Jordan: Shelbaieh 32; Mohammed Aqel 51 PK

UAE 5 - Vietnam 0; Qatar, Turkmenistan win

In the return leg between Bahrain and Malaysia, things got feisty early on. Both teams had a player ejected in the 12th minute. Bahrain lost Abdulrahman and Malaysia lost Zafuan Abd Radzak. Despite this initial wackiness, the games itself was devoid of action, resulting in a scoreless draw and the advancement of Bahrain to round three.

Turkmenistan did better than its 1-0 victory in Phnom Penh, eliminating Cambodia from the World Cup with a big win, 4-1. Still, Cambodia put early pressure on the host team with an early goal that tied the aggregate at one. A late goal before the half leveled the game, and from there the Turkmenis went on the advance.

In an utterly dominant performance at home in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates shamed Vietnam. In what was the most anticipated match of the day, Ismail Matar came up with an all-world performance for his country. He started the scoring with a beautiful strike from outside of the penalty box. Next, he played a nifty no-look pass with the back of his heel that resulted in goal number two. In the second half, his perfect cross to the head of a teammate gave UAE a 3-0. In stoppage time, he drove into the penalty area and drew a foul, which resulted in a penalty goal the ended the scoring at 5-0. UAE are off to round three.

Qatar soundly finished off its tie with Sri Lanka with a comprehensive 5-0 win at home. At 3-0 in the second half, the Sri Lankans went down a man as Raheem was evicted for a second yellow. Two men scored braces for Qatar. Qatar now advance straight to round three.

Maldives 2 - Yemen 0; Tajikistan, Hong Kong, Nepal, Uzbekistan, China win

In the first match of fifteen today, Hong Kong put away East Timor for good with a massive stomping at home, 8-1, although the lead was just 2-0 at the half. Hong Kong win the aggregate 11-3 and advance to the second round.

Tajikistan took on Bangladesh at home next. After a tense waiting period with the aggregate tied at 1, the Tajiks finally had a chance to take the field and they went on the a resounding 5-0 win at home in Dushanbe.

Oman repeated its first leg score in the second leg, defeating Nepal 2-0 again, this time on the road.

China reasserted their dominance over Myanmar, although the 4-0 result in Malaysia was slightly more humane than the 7-0 thrashing in Foshan. China advance straight to round three.

Taiwan produced a better showing at home to Uzbekistan, playing the first half without a goal, but the Uzbeks still won 2-0 to push the aggregate to 11-0. Uzbekistan are off to round three.

Iraq, holding a 7-0 lead in the aggregate, took it easy against Pakistan in leg two. The crowd in Syria may not have been treated to a beautiful match, but the Iraqis advance to round three with a scoreless draw.

In the most dramatic of the early matches, the Maldives took on Yemen at home. The Maldives had a 1-0 lead at the half and knew that they just needed a 3-0 win to tie the aggregate score. In the second half, they struck the back of the net once more but unfortunately were unable to score over the last twenty-three minutes and were eliminated. A relieved Yemen squad advances to the second round.

Syria advance with 2-1 win over Afghanistan

Afghanistan were down three goals coming into the match. Still, a goal early on gave the Afghans hope to come back. Unfotunately for them, the Syrians netted a goal a mere one minute later and then went on to win the contest outright in the second half with a second goal. The final aggregate score was 5-1. Syria need only one of the top eleven seeds to lose in order to gain a bye to the third round.

Their best chances of gaining a bye rest with the fates of Jordan and the United Arab Emirates. Jordan are down 2-0 to Kyrgyzstan with the home leg still to come. UAE are up 1-0 with the home leg still to come, but they are playing a dangerous opponent in Vietnam.

Iraq give Pakistan a stomping

In a routine victory, the 2007 Asian Cup champions Iraq pounded the Pakistanis into submission with a brutal 7-0 victory in Lahore. The Iraqis get a victory parade at "home" on October 28, although the match will be played in Syria. These two teams were the last two in Asia to begin their first round matchup. In the first of the five matches, the North Koreans took a 3-0 halftime lead in Mongolia before coasting to a 4-1 aggregate lead.

Hong Kong took a road win over East Timor in Indonesia, 3-2. After taking a 2-0 lead on an own goal, Hong Kong held the lead for good.

Qatar played a tight match with underdog Sri Lanka in the Sri Lankan capital, Colombo. After a scoreless first half, a goal midway through the second period was all that Qatar needed to notch a road win.

China stomped all over Myanmar at home in Foshan, 7-0.

Bahrain jumped over Malaysia from the outset, starting off with two goals before the Malaysians answered with one in stoppage time. Bahrain regained its dominance in the second half and won by a final tally of 4-1.

Kyrgyzstan 2 - Jordan 0

In a humongous upset, the Kyrgyz were able to overthrow the Jordanians with a 2-0 victory at home. With a goal scored just before the half, the Kyrgyz continued the charge with a second-half goal that essentially sealed the game. With the all-important shutout, Kyrgyzstan need only a two-goal loss with one goal scored (such as 1-3 or 2-4) to advance into the second round of Asian qualifying. Jordan, at number eleven, are the highest seed so far to suffer a loss in Asian qualifying.

Paraguay 1 - Uruguay 0; Brazil, Chile win, Colombia draw

In the first CONMEBOL qualifier of the day, Colombia garnered only one disappointing point from their match in Bolivia. The scoreless draw gives Bolivia their first point and Colombia their second. Bolivia had a much stronger attack going, putting five shots on goal to Colombia's two, but a red card to Leonel Reyes in the 69th minutes shut down the Bolivian offense.

Chile reversed their score from the game against Argentina and took out their frustrations on poor Perú. The 2-0 home win gives Chile three points and keeps the Peruvians at one. There were plenty of chances for both teams, but Chile capitalized twice in the first hour.

Paraguay hosted Uruguay four days after a disappointing road draw to Perú, but this time around they made no mistakes, putting up three points to bring their haul to four. Uruguay were blanked by Paraguay's defense and saw their dreams dashed by an early goal. Shots were few and far between as only six were taken during the match.

"Ecuador always pose us problems because they've got some fine players and they are physically strong. This game will be no exception and we need to be on our toes." -Dunga, Brazilian coach

Brazil, on short rest, found a way to turn up the heat in the second half at home, scoring four of their five goals after the 70th minute. Brazil have yet to surrender a goal in qualifying, and Ecuador were not about to be the first team to strike the Brazilian net. It was an absolute destruction in Rio de Janeiro, as Ecuador were outshot sixteen to two.

Sierra Leone 1 - Guinea-Bissau 0; New Zealand win in Fiji

In the day's first matchup, the New Zealanders put the controversy of the last week behind them as they shutout the Fijians in Lautoka, 2-0. They scored once in the first half but almost saw their lead vanish when the tournament's top scorer Vakatalesau hit the crossbar. Smeltz buried two goals in the second half off of headers, but both were disallowed due to offsides violations. He broke through onside with under five minutes to go to complete the tally. Both teams' next games are on November 17th.

New Zealand coach Herbert commented after the game. He said, "the pleasing thing for me was that we showed some real character. I'm happy with how we ground it out. We talked extensively at the hotel beforehand about how it didn't matter what the performance looked like, we just wanted to get a result... We stuttered along at times and probably didn't get players forward like we wanted to, but at the end of the day I'm delighted for the players because it's three points. That'll give everybody a bit of confidence and it's given us some momentum going into next month's home and away fixtures against Vanuatu."

Sierra Leone held serve at home with a 1-0 victory over Guinea-Bissau. They scored early and then played the final seventy-five minutes out as a scoreless draw. Sierra Leone takes the lead in the aggregate score to leg two on November 17th. After that match, Africa will be down to its final forty-eight teams and ready for the preliminary draw.

Argentina 2 - Venezuela 0

In a match that proved their superiority, the Argentines defeated the Venezuelans on the road convincingly. The Argentine defense was in shutout form the entire game, except for the first ten minutes of the second half. Still, they pitched a shutout and could have won by four goals or more had Messi taken it upon himself to shoot the ball more often when he had open looks. Messi's unselfishness cost his team somewhere between one and three goals on the night. Still, it did not matter as the Argentines cemented their place at the top of the South American group table. Both teams resume play on November 17th.

Goals scored:
Argentina: G. Milito 16; Messi 43

Brazil 0 - Colombia 0; Madagascar win

Madagascar opened the two-game slate for World Cup qualifying today with a high-scoring win over neighboring Comoros. Down a goal within the first ten minutes, Madagascar fought to a 2-1 lead at the half. They went on to win the second half as well, using their 4-1 second half advantage to push the final score to 6-2. The teams travel to Comoros for the second leg on November 17th.

In the more anticipated match on Sunday, Brazil paid Colombia a visit. Colombia was looking to avenge a poor showing in la Copa América with a loud result against the Brazilians. They did not get the full three points, but the Colombians did manage to pull out 1 crucial point with a hard-fought scoreless draw. Renteria put two nice headers on goal for Colombia but had both shots turned away Julio Cesar. In fact, Colombia outshot Brazil eleven to five, although their shots on goal advantage was only six to five. Six yellow cards were handed out in total, with four of them going to Brazil. Both teams play next on October 17th.

Venezuela 1 - Ecuador 0; Argentina win; Paraguay tie Perú

Venezuela became the first country to win a road match in Quito in over six years with a stunning 1-0 victory over Ecuador. Ecuador had gone undefeated at home in its previous qualifying campaign and had defeated Venezuela 2-0 in each of the last two qualifcation cycles. That all changed with one 45-yard blast off of a free kick by a Venezuelan defender, José Manuel Rey. It was the first time that Venezuela had ever scored a goal in Ecuador during World Cup qualifying, and it was also the first time that Venezuela had not lost its qualifying opener. Ecuador will try again on the 17th. Venezuela plays on the 16th against Argentina.

Argentina came out with a strong first half and took a 2-0 lead into halftime at home against Chile. Riquelme was the man to put both into the net. They held on by the same advantage to win the game, although they held a one-man advantage for much of the second half after Chile's Álvarez was red carded. Chile plays again on the 17th.

"In South America, we are at the tail end. That's our reality." - José del Solar, Peruvian coach

Perú, shockingly, was able to pick up one point at home against favored Paraguay with a scoreless draw despite being outshot twelve to four. Roque Santa Cruz missed the match for Paraguay and will also miss his country's next match. Both teams resume action on the 17th.

Uzbekistan, Uruguay dismantle opponents

Uzbekistan smashed Taiwan in the first of their two meetings this month, with a hat-trick scored by Shatskykh within the first 35 minutes. They won in shutout form, 9-0. The return leg will be on October 28th. Taiwan will be hosting the Uzbeks in the second match.

The Uruguayan coach, Oscar Tabarez, spoke about Bolivia before their match. "They are a strong team in midfield. The three midfielders are the base of everything which they do. We have to limit them and wrest control. We must win but we need to be on our toes because they play very good football and control the ball well"

His players listened. Uruguay used its three-man front of Forlán, Abreu, and Suárez to thwart the Bolivians, equaling their score in a 2003 qualifier in Uruguay, 5-0. Ronald García's first half red card didn't help Bolivia's cause. Uruguay is looking to improve upon its consecutive fifth-place finishes in the last two qualifying tournaments. Both teams resume qualifying on October 17th.

New Zealand government postpones match

The New Zealand government refused to grant a visa to Fijian goalkeeper Simione Tamanisau. FIFA postponed the October 13 meeting between the two sides, deeming that it would have been unfair to make the two countries play each other when one team was forced to play without a full squad.

I'd like to take this moment to point out how much the New Zealand government should be ashamed of itself. If anything, FIFA should have made New Zealand forfeit the match. How could they deny a man the right to play for his country when the rest of his team had been given visas? The match had been on the schedule for almost a month! The logistics should have already been worked out.

Turkmenistan 1 - Cambodia 0

Turkmenistan scored the only goal in today's lone World Cup 2010 qualifier. As visitors to the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh, Turkemistan held tough until the final five minutes of the match when they finally broke the scoreless tie. Turkmenistan will be looking to advance to the second round of Asian qualifying because they are most likely not going to be one of the top eleven seeds to progress. They simply need a tie in their home match against Cambodia to advance. The second leg takes place on October 28.

UAE 1 - Vietnam 0; Bangladesh tie Tajikistan; Lebanon, Singapore win

In the most highly anticipated of the day's matchups, UAE took a victory on the road in Vietnam and, more importantly, now own an advantage in the aggregate score before going home to face Vietnam in Abu Dhabi on October 28. The lone goal came just eleven minutes before time was called.

In another highly anticipated battle, the Nehru Cup champion India suffered a demoralizing lost to Lebanon in Saida. India will have to overcome a 4-1 deficit when they return to Chennai to face Lebanon on October 28. What stings India the most is that they owned a 1-0 lead in the first half before surrendering a torrent of goals.

Singapore took a surprisingly convincing win in what was supposed to be a close tie against Palestine. The home away from home of Doha, Qatar, did not prove beneficial at all to the Palestinians as they suffered a decisive 4-0 loss with a date in Singapore to look forward to on October 28.

In Dhaka, Bangladesh held a lead for a total of eight minutes over visiting Tajikistan before conceding a penalty kick that knotted the score. The aggregate score goes to Dushanbe tied 1-1. The second leg will take place on October 28.

Yemen beat the Maldives at home 3-0, and their neighbors Oman did likewise to Nepal, 2-0. Both of the southwest Asian countries look to finish off their opponents on the road on October 28.

Syria defeated Afghanistan 3-0 on Monday, though the score was tied at zero for the first 74 minutes of action. The lapse at the end will cost Afghanistan severely, as the two teams next meet in Tajikistan for Afghanistan's home leg on October 26.

In the biggest blowout of the day, Thailand dispatched Macau easily, allowing one first-half goal in a 6-1 victory. The schedule makers seem to want to take mercy on poor Macau, as they are scheduled to finish their campaign at home on October 15, before 14 other Asian teams even play their opening legs.

Bhutan withdraw, send Kuwait to Round Three

Bhutan withdrew from AFC qualifying, making Kuwait the second team to receive a walkover in the first round, along with Indonesia.

Unlike Indonesia, due to their seeding Kuwait will advance directly into round three and join Australia, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Japan, and Iran.

Also, new site locations have been confirmed. Iraq announced that their home game against Pakistan will take place in Aleppo, Syria. Palestine announced that they will play host to Singapore in Doha, Qatar. Afghanistan will take on Syria in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. East Timor have moved their home game versus Hong Kong to Bali, Indonesia.

Schedule for OFC Phase Two

New Zealand will begin its World Cup qualifying campaign in October. In an interesting setup, the OFC Nations Cup is made up of three home-and-away ties, the first in October 2007, the next in November 2007, and the last in September 2008. All four teams remaining in Oceania will play each other twice within a period of a week. The numbers are the squads' current ELO rankings.

I'm predicting that New Zealand will advance to the AFC-OFC playoff since their two closest rivals in 2006 qualifying are both gone (Australia and the Solomon Islands).

Vanuatu eliminate Solomon Islands 2-0; New Caledonia are golden

Vanuatu won the bronze medal in the South Pacific Games and eliminated gold-medal favorite Solomon Islands from World Cup contention before the second round of OFC qualifying. In an ugly match that saw seven yellow cards and a missed penalty by the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu repaid their rivals with a 2-0 victory, matching the Solomons' score in their group stage match. The Solomon Islands go down as the biggest disappointment of the Games, ahead of Tahiti.

In the final match, New Caledonia defied all of the predictions and not only advanced to the second phase of qualifying, but won the South Pacific Games gold medal with a 1-0 win over Fiji. New Caledonia really sparkled defensively throughout the tournament, surrendering only three goals while going undefeated. They also were the only team to put any goals into the Fijian net, striking twice in two games. Certainly, they are now the second favorites to win the OFC Nations Cup, behind New Zealand.

Didier Chambaron, the coach of New Caledonia, said after the match that the win was "a great feeling. We were very strong in defense and played the game in the right way. I am very pleased."

São Tomé e Príncipe, Central African Republic withdraw

The withdrawal of two of the ten African teams in the preliminary rounds has caused chaos in the AFC qualification system. São Tomé e Príncipe and the Central African Republic exit the tournament, giving two teams a newfound pass into the second phase. These teams are not the teams that were drawn against São Tomé e Príncipe and the Central African Republic, but rather the two highest seeded African teams in the first phase. Swaziland and Seychelles advance. The new match dates and ties are below.

Note that in place of a two-legged playoff, Somalia and Djibouti will play only one match, an elimination game in Djibouti. This was due to unsafe conditions in Somalia.

Fiji and New Caledonia on to stage two, avoid Melanesian elimanation

In the all-Melanesian semifinals, New Caledonia pulled off an enormous upset of the Solomon Islands to progress to round two of Oceania qualifying. Down 2-1 in the second half, the Solomon Islands gave up the advantage and then suffered two red cards by their men, Maemae and Omikorio. A stoppage-time goal by the Caledonians sent them through to the finals, 3-2.

In the other semifinal, Fiji passed by Vanuatu 3-0 on their way to progressing to the second round of Oceania qualifying. After being outplayed for one half, the Fijians still broke through first with a 40-yard strike from Baleitoga.

The Solomon Islands and Vanuatu now have a rematch of their group showdown, this time with World Cup elimination at stake.

Goal scorers:
New Caledonia: Kabeu 37; Toto 54; Mercier 90+4

Solomon Islands: Fa'arodo 40; Menapi 47

Fiji: Baleitoga 44; Vakatalesau 66 PK; Krishna 69

Fiji 1 - New Caledonia 1; Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Tahiti win

In Group B action, the Solomon Islands clinched the group with a solid 3-0 win over Samoa, putting the hosts down a goal immediately after stealing the opening kickoff.

Vanuatu advanced over Tonga 4-1 thanks to a first-half hat trick by Soromon.

In Group A, Fiji tied New Caledonia despite being down a goal at the half. Both sides conceded their first goals of the tournament, but Fiji's greater overall goal differential places them at the top of the group.

In a chippy final match for both squads, Tahiti defeated the Cook Islands 1-0. Bennett was shown a red in the second half for Tahiti, who then proceeded to score the games only goal a man down. The Cook Islands responded with two yellow cards of their own afterwards, from Joseph and Le Mouton.

In the semifinals, the Solomon Islands meet New Caledonia and Fiji meet Vanuatu. I expect the Solomon Islands and Fiji to win, with Vanuatu advancing to the next phase over New Caledonia.

Goal scorers:
Solomon Islands: Totori 1, 37; Maemae 67

Vanuatu: Soromon 23, 33, 40; Maleb 75

Tonga: Savieti 49

New Caledonia: 44

Fiji: Kainihewe 56

Tahiti: Tinorua 64

Solomon Islands 2 - Vanuatu 0; Fiji advances

The Solomon Islands took the lead in Group B with a hard-fought victory over Vanuatu, putting themselves in a position to likely face New Caledonia in the next round. Vanuatu will most likely have to meet Group A giants Fiji in the other semifinal. Still, with Samoa and Tonga yet to be eliminated, the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu are not yet in the clear.

Fiji advanced to the semifinals out of Group A, eliminating both the Cook Islands and their Tahitian opponents with a 4-0 win. Fiji was already up a goal when Gerimi was sent off for Tahiti, allowing Fiji even more goal-scoring opportunities.

Day five will see Fiji and New Caledonia face off for semifinal positioning and Vanuatu going for a win over Tonga to eliminate Samoa.

Goal scorers:
Solomon Islands: Bebeu 61; Fa'arodo 65

Fiji: Waqa 17; Baletoga 38; Vakatalesau 49, 73

Tonga, Cook Islands record first wins

In the two early games on day four of the South Pacific Games, Tonga and the Cook Islands avoided mathematical elimination with wins over last-place teams.

In Group A, the Cook Islands did not take their opponents from Tuvalu lightly as their counterparts Tahiti and New Caledonia did. The Cook Islands went on to achieve a 4-1 result for their efforts, the only blemish being an own goal.

In Group B, Tonga came out with a victory over American Samoa, 4-0, despite a disappointing lack of finishing touch in front of the American goal.

Goal scorers:
Cook Islands: Mateariki 28, 70; Le Mouton 88; Tom 90+3

Tuvalu: Willis 83 OG (Cook Islands)

Tonga: Moala 37 PK; Palu 54, 61; Uhatahi 86
